Malulu Editions has just released Lucha Libre 1 & 2 with an essay by Alejandro Murguia, poet laureate of San Francisco.
Lucha Libre explores the unique Mexican tradition of masked wrestling, a tradition full of mystique and conjecture.
These photos, taken by John O’Leary S. over the course of 10 years (1980-1990), show Lucha Libre’s
deep human drama in all its highs and lows, and offers a rare insight into Mexican culture.
Lucha Libre is comprised of 2 portfolios of 20 - 13” x 19” sleeved pigment prints in a custom etched aluminum box.
The portfolios have an accompanying 6 page illustrated essay with a visual index in English or Spanish.
The extensive essay “Wrestling in the provinces of Mexico” is by Alejandro Murguia, poet Laureate of San Francisco,
two-time winner of the American Book Award and professor in Latina/Latino Studies at San Francisco State University.
